Women in Development of Central Massachsuetts gives a $1,000 scholarship each year to a graduating senior from the City of Worcester. The decision is made by the WID Scholarship Committee made up of 5 members and the Scholarship Chair. The Committee receives the applications (usually 12-15) for review from the Greater Worcester Community Foundation in early April and they have a month to review them. Each and every applicant is qualified with exceptional attributes and circumstances so it is a challenging but rewarding process. An important criteria is to review the applicant’s volunteer record in the community.
The Committee is asked to choose their top three choices and then there is a conference call to decide. Each applicant is given a point for being chosen and then we narrow down the selection. Once the selections have been narrowed down, usually a second conference call is required to make the final decision.
At the WID annual meeting in early June, the recipient is asked to attend, meet the group and receive the check. It is the highlight of the meeting.
